Keir Starmer talks about the wisdom he gained after the prosecutions from rioters all these years
Last summer was very ‘educative’ for Keir Starmer since London was in fire after the extended riots from young people fighting for their right to free or at least low cost education in the universities.
Mr Starmer said that the rhythm under which the rioters were brought into courts, was unprecedented and disproportionate to the actual action.
However he said that, “I don’t think they [rioters] would have thought: ‘Oh well, am I going to get 12 months or 18 months?’ I don’t think people gamble on the length of sentence, particularly. They gamble on: ‘Am I going to get caught? Am I going to get sentenced and sent to prison?’ And if the answer is: ‘I’m now watching on the television some other people who had been caught 24 hours or 48 hours after they were on the streets with us’ – I think that’s a very powerful message.”
Moreover, according to the CPS, “The disorder last summer brought unprecedented circumstances for the criminal justice system. The CPS has been pleased to take part in what is likely to become an important piece of historical research into the reasons, the reactions and the criminal justice system’s swift response in a very challenging environment.”
